Plan that defines Scottsdale’s future available for public review, feedback

During the past 18 months, thousands of stakeholders have shared their ideas on Scottsdale’s future.  That feedback has resulted in a draft of the 2011 General Plan Update.   A General Plan serves as a community roadmap, providing direction on the future of the city during the next 10 to 20 years.

Anyone who has a stake in Scottsdale’s future is invited to attend one of three open houses to learn about and comment on the draft plan.   The open houses will be held:
• Thursday, May 12, Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Via Linda
• Wednesday, May 18, Pinnacle Peak Elementary School, 7690 E. Williams Drive
• Thursday, May 19, SkySong Convergence Room, 1475 N. Scottsdale Road
Open houses will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with a brief presentation at 5:45 p.m.

Based on feedback, city staff will continue to refine the plan. The City Council will vote in October on whether to adopt the 2011 General Plan.  If Council adopts the plan, it will move forward to Scottsdale voters for possible ratification in spring 2012.

State law requires Arizona cities to update their plan every 10 years.  Stakeholder-provided input on Scottsdale’s 2001 General Plan led to key successes.  They include:
• Attracted five new bio companies, as well as assisted Mayo Clinic with opening a bio research building.
• In the past decade, Scottsdale has added about 5,400 of the 17,000 acres of land it protects in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
• During the past five years, the Scottsdale Police Department has achieved a 3 percent decrease in violent crime and a 14 percent decrease in property crimes.
