View the May 8 City Council strategic planning workshop
The City Council held a strategic planning workshop that focused on Scottsdale’s successes and challenges. It also included identifying key priority areas for the City Council to work on over the next year. These priorities include getting the McDowell corridor on the right track, strategically supporting tourism and visitor events, and creating a high performance work culture for city staff. The council will continue working on strategic plans and goals at an upcoming meeting. More information will be shared soon. View the Council’s May 8 workshop.
Scottsdale selects new economic development director
The city has hired Danielle Casey as economic development director, the top choice from an open recruitment that resulted in 111 candidates. Her first day on the job will be Monday, June 10. Casey has spent the last eight years with the city of Maricopa, including two years as economic development director and the last year as assistant city manager. She has more than seven years of experience in economic development as an analyst, manager and director. She is the president-elect of the Arizona Association for Economic Development. In Scottsdale, Casey will direct a staff of nine whose responsibilities include: retaining, expanding and attracting business; supporting downtown Scottsdale as a destination attraction for visitors and residents; and administering contracts for the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau and Scottsdale Cultural Council
“Building the Vision” exhibit relocates to McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatics Center
Scottsdale citizens have a rich tradition of coming together to imagine the future and developing plans to get there. That history is being celebrated by “Building the Vision,” a free exhibit on display through summer at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatics Center, 15525 N. Thompson Peak Parkway. The lobby exhibit not only traces the history of such landmark projects as the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, but provides visitors an opportunity to read and comment on the draft values and vision statements produced as part of the General Plan 2014 process.The General Plan is a statement of goals and policies that work as the primary tool for guiding the future development and character of the city over the next 10 to 20 years. Railroad Park’s Concert Series continues with Raun Alosi
Local band Raun Alosi & 60 Degrees North plays a mix of music at the next McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park’s concert t. The event runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road. Bring a blanket or chair and hear a variety of favorite local bands. Train and carousel rides are available during all concerts. Tickets are $2 each and children younger than three ride free with a paying adult. Food will also be available for purchase. Concerts run through July 7. For more information, call 480-312-2312.
Scottsdale Ranch Park hosts US Open National tennis playoffs
Scottsdale Ranch Park will host the USTA’s Southwest U.S. Open National Playoff Championship for the third year in a row May 18-20. Playoffs include both men’s and women’s singles and mixed doubles. The USTA created the playoffs to expand the footprint of the US Open to cities nationwide by providing the opportunity for all players 14 years and older to earn a berth into the tournament. Scottsdale Ranch Park is at 10400 E Via Linda.

Final budget adoption slated for June 4; public comment welcome
There is still an opportunity to comment on the proposed budget before the City Council considers its adoption at itsTuesday, June 4, City Council meeting. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Kiva, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. The city’s proposed fiscal year 2013/14 budget combines a moderate increase in revenues with continued focus on efficient spending to maintain services while addressing items that have been deferred for the past several years. Overall, general fund base revenues are projected to increase by about $6 million – or 3 percent. Review the proposed budget.

Fire Department hosts a pair of open houses on Saturday
In honor of Emergency Medical Services Week, residents are invited to open houses to learn more about how the Fire Department’s specially-trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians provide community-based care. The open houses will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at two locations: DC Ranch Fire Station, 20355 N. Pima Road and Downtown Scottsdale Fire Station, 7522 E. Indian School Road. Loaner curb painting kits available
Is your house number hard to read, unlit, or obscured by landscaping? Add painted house numbers to your curb by borrowing a free Curb Painting Kit. "Do your part to help public safety and emergency personnel locate your home more easily," says Police Chief Alan Rodbell. "It takes very little time to ensure your street address is clearly visible to ambulance, fire and police teams." The kit is free to use, and includes stencils, masking tape, brushes and instructions. Paint is provided by the user. To borrow a kit, call 480-312-3111.
Document shredding available May 25
Don’t be the victim of identity theft – shred your unneeded documents. The Police Officers of Scottsdale Association will hold a shredding event from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Walmart parking lot, 15355 N. Northsight Blvd. There is a $3 per box suggested donation. Proceeds will benefit the “Shop with a Cop” program. Get more information.
Scottsdale Cares. Do you?
Did you know you could add $1 to your city water bill to help those facing tough times? Simply pay the “grand total” on your monthly bill and a dollar will go toward Scottsdale Cares, the city’s voluntary utility bill donation program. Learn more about Scottsdale Cares by watching this.
Upcoming brush and bulk pickup schedule
The city provides monthly brush and bulk item collection, offering residents a convenient way to dispose of items too large for refuse containers. Residents are asked to have brush and bulk items out for pick up by 5 a.m. on Monday the week of scheduled service.

** Service Area #4 – Thomas Road to McKellips Road; and Pinnacle Peak Road to Thunderbird Road: Week of May 20.

Veterans groups will commemorate Memorial Day May 27
Residents are invited to commemorate Memorial Day at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Chaplain Statue at Scottsdale City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Activities will include the reading of General Orders, a eulogy, wreath-laying and remarks by several dignitaries including U.S. Rep. Senior Center hosts “Coffee with a Cop” May 28
The Granite Reef Senior Center hosts “Coffee with a Cop,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 28. Scottsdale Police Crime Prevention Officer Toni Moag will meet with attendees to answer questions, provide crime prevention tips and assist with citizen requests. “Coffee with a Cop” occurs the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Senior Center, located at 1700 N.
