Scottsdale commemorates “Fair Housing Month”
In concert with the national recognition, Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane will proclaim April as Fair Housing Month in Scottsdale. This year marks the 44th anniversary of President Johnson signing the Fair Housing Act into law. It was established to eliminate discrimination in housing opportunities and to affirmatively further housing choices for Americans. The Fair Housing Act established the Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
In addition to the mayoral proclamation, Senior Grants Program Specialist Jewel James will represent the city at the Arizona Fair Housing Partnership regional fair housing event. It will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Disability Empowerment Center, 5025 E. Washington St., Phoenix. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Information presented is geared toward housing providers, property managers and realtors. Learn more about the event.
“The city continuously evaluates our fair housing practices to identify areas for improvement and to ensure compliance with fair housing laws,” says Jewel James, senior grants program specialist.
The Fair Housing program is part of the city’s Community Assistance Office. The office coordinates these programs, as well:
• Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8): Rental assistance to more than 720 low-income families in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the private rental community.
• The Family Self-Sufficiency Program: Provides case management services to Section 8 participants who are committed to improving their work-life skills and their future.
• The Community Assistance Office also manages the City's allocation of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME federal grants, in addition to managing the city's Housing Rehabilitation, Emergency Repair and Roof Repair & Replacement programs.
