Veterans Day commemoration features Holocaust survivor, Army doctor

U.S. Army Medical Corps veteran Alexander White will share his inspiring story of hope as a Holocaust survivor at this year’s Veterans Day commemoration. The program, which is free and open to the public, starts at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road.

Dr. Alexander White was just 16 when the Nazis invaded Poland. Of 34 extended family members, only he and two cousins survived. White later discovered he was saved by being one of “Schindler’s Jews.” Oskar Schindler is credited with saving an estimated 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. After the war, White attended medical school in Munich before moving to the United States. He would later serve in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and become an associate professor of medicine at the Chicago Medical School. He practiced in that city for 40 years before retiring to Scottsdale almost 15 years ago.

This year’s program also features a naturalization ceremony conducted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Nearly 50 Arizona residents will become U.S. citizens during the Commemoration.

The 108th Army National Guard Band kicks off the program at 3 p.m. with patriotic music. The formal program begins at 3:30 p.m.
