City seeks experts to evaluate Desert Discovery Center feasibility

Scottsdale is forming a committee to conduct Phase III of the study for the Desert Discovery Center (DDC), which is envisioned as a place for visitors to discover the story of the Upper Sonoran Desert and Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Phases I and II explored potential market opportunities and offered design concepts for the center. Phase III will assess private funding capacity and interest, evaluate public funding options, and recommend a business, operating and management model for the DDC.

The Phase III committee will comprise five members. While Scottsdale residency is not a requirement, each member must have expertise in at least one of the following areas: fundraising success with institutional, corporate and individual donors; environmental education; exhibit programming; non-profit management; and launching and marketing facilities similar to the DDC.

The committee will convene at least one to two times per month in public meetings beginning in April 2011, and disband upon completion of the Phase III study, which may take as long as one year.

Residents can learn more about the Phase III study and apply for the committee at http://scottsdaleaz.gov/preserve/DDC. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Feb. 14.
