Scottsdale Environmental Design Award winners showcase environmental excellence
John Douglas Architects recently renovated an existing office building in Downtown Scottsdale, updating it with solar panels, high-tech insulation, retractable roof shading, and recycled and renewable materials. Their effort paid off in more ways than one. Besides saving money and the environment, John Douglas Architects have captured a Scottsdale Environmental Design Award (SEDA). They are among six home and business owners, designers and contractors that are recipients of the award.
The biennial awards program recognizes the best in Scottsdale design and architecture – aesthetically expressive, sustainable work appropriate to the upper Sonoran Desert and Scottsdale’s unique environment. The program serves to educate the public by example and acknowledge quality green and sustainable development.

“These award winners demonstrate their ability to implement the ‘Scottsdale Sensitive Design Principles,’” said SEDA Coordinator Steve Venker. He added that winners were recognized for project types that included residential and commercial buildings and structures, open space, landscape and urban design.
Program sponsors include the city’s Environmental Quality Advisory and Development Review boards, Scottsdale Northeast Valley section of the American Institute of Architects – Phoenix Metro Chapter, Taliesin Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and the American Society of Landscape Architects – Arizona Chapter.
A third-party jury of building and landscape architects judged the nominations.
