On Sunday at 7:15 p.m. emergency crews were called to the Gateway Trailhead at Thompson Peak Mountain for two stranded hikers. The hikers began their climb at 2:00 p.m. About 2/3 the way up the mountain the hikers left the trail in an attempt to reach the towers at the top of the mountain. After it became dark and started to snow, help was called. Dispatchers were able to use cell phone technology to assist in locating the hikers’ position on the mountain.

The hikers were a mile away from the closest trail when they were rescued. The rescue utilized both Scottsdale and Phoenix Fire, Phoenix PD Firebird aircraft and MCSO Rescue.

The hikers were checked out but refused further treatment by medical personnel.
