Suicidal Man Brings SWAT Callout

Event date: Wednesday, April 04, 2012, from 7:19 AM to 7:19 AM

Date: 4/3/2012
Time: 8 PM through 10:30 PM
Report #: 1207719
Location: Orange Tree Apartment Community
4181 N. Granite Reef Road
Victim Info: Various Neighbors
Suspect Data: Burnett, Jake DOB: 08/11/1985
Details: Burnett called 911 and reported he wanted to kill himself and said he had a knife. He called 911 a second time and reported that he had a gun and was going to kill himself. He said that he was alone in his apartment. Officers arrived on the scene and the suspect yelled out the front door several times that he wanted to kill himself. He refused to come out. This prompted a SWAT callout, including our BEAR tactical armored vehicle. Several adjoining apartments were safely evacuated while negotiators tried to get Burnett to come out of his apartment. After about 2 hours of unsuccessful negotiations, the team deployed pepper spray into Burnett's apartment. This prompted him to exit his apartment. He was unarmed when he came out and was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries to any neighbors, officers, or the suspect.

Burnett was taken to a mental health facility for evaluation. Charges for disorderly conduct are pending.
