Q. What is WaterSense? A. WaterSense is a program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that helps consumers identify high performance, water-efficient devices and services that can help reduce water use. Back to topQ. How much water does an EPA WaterSense labeled toilet use? A. The average water use for an EPA WaterSense labeled toilet is 1.28 gallons per flush. Old toilets use as much as 7 gallons per flush. Current plumbing standards require 1.6 gallons per flush or less. Back to topQ. I do not receive water from Scottsdale, but I live in Scottsdale and/or have a Scottsdale mailing address. Can I get a rebate?A. No. Scottsdale offers this program to its water customers to reduce demands on its water system. The rebate program is supported via water use fees, so only those who receive a water bill from Scottsdale are eligible for a rebate. Households that do not receive a water bill from Scottsdale either because they are on a well or receive water from another water provider are not eligible for a rebate. Back to topQ. Do I have to buy the toilets at a particular store?A. No. A customer can buy a toilet from any retailer (including online). Make sure the invoice/receipt is itemized, dated, and shows the type of the toilet purchased. Original receipts from major home improvement stores with stock-keeping units (sku) or universal product codes (UPC) on them are acceptable for proof of purchase. Back to topQ. Can I hire someone to install the toilet? A. Yes. If you purchase the toilet from the plumber/handyman make sure you get an itemized invoice. The itemized invoice must show the type and cost of the toilet purchased. Back to topQ. Will the city check to see that my toilet has been installed?A. As part of the rebate process inspections may be performed. Customers must agree to allow a post-installation inspection during normal business hours, if requested. Back to topQ. What if I lost or can't get a receipt for my toilet?A. The application cannot be approved without an itemized, dated sales receipt showing the type and cost of the toilet purchased. Inspections will not be done in lieu of missing receipts. Back to topQ. How and when will I receive the rebate?A. It will appear as a credit on your water bill within two billing cycles after your application has been approved. Back to topQ. What do I do if I live in a homeowners association and do not pay my own water bill? A. If you belong to a homeowners association (HOA) and do not pay your own water bill, include the name of the HOA’s management company (if applicable), contact name, and phone number of the person responsible for paying the water bill on the application. We will provide the HOA with the documentation needed so they can reimburse you after the credit appears on the water bill. Back to topQ. What happens if I no longer pay the water bill, but replaced a toilet prior to the new owner/renter becoming the active person on the account? How can I get the rebate?A. The rebate can only be applied to the active water account for that property. If you have rented or sold the property, your option is to work with the person currently paying the water bill to see if they will reimburse you. Back to topQ. How do I destroy/disable my old toilet?A. By smashing or cracking the tank and bowl you will ensure that no one else can reuse your less efficient toilet. This will ensure that water savings from your new toilet will be permanent. Residents who pay for residential collection services can have their inefficient toilet picked up during brush and bulk collection. Back to topQ.
