Highlights from Scottsdale’s Citizen Survey

Scottsdale residents value their quality of life and give high marks to local businesses and city employees, according to the National Citizen Survey conducted in December 2010.

Noteworthy excerpts from the survey are highlighted below.


A great place to live and retire

Scottsdale residents give high ratings to their quality of life:

  • 96 percent rated Scottsdale as either an “excellent” or “good” place to live – that ranking puts Scottsdale in the top 5 percent of 319 benchmark cities that asked residents the same question (15th of 319 cities).
  • 94 percent rated Scottsdale’s overall quality of life as either “excellent” or “good” – which puts Scottsdale in the top 6 percent of 371 benchmark cities (21st of 371 cities).
  • 91 percent rated Scottsdale as an “excellent” or “good” place to retire – the second-highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (2nd of 293 cities).
  • 96 percent would recommend living in Scottsdale to someone who asked – which puts Scottsdale in the top 10 percent of 147 benchmark cities (14th of 147 cities).
  • 92 percent are “very” or “somewhat” like to remain in Scottsdale for the next five years – the seventh-highest rating in any of the benchmark cities (7th of 146 cities).

Top-ranked businesses

Scottsdale respondents gave top marks to local businesses and employers:

  • 89 percent rated the overall quality of business and service establishments in Scottsdale “excellent” or “good” – that’s the highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (1st out of 132 cities)
  • 92 percent rated shopping opportunities “excellent” or “good” – the third-highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (3rd out of 255 cities)
  • 88% called Scottsdale an “excellent” or “good” place to work – the fourth-highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (4th out of 263 cities)

Excellent city services and responsive employees

City services and employees were rated highly:

  • 85 percent rated the responsiveness of city employees as either "excellent" or "good" – the seventh-highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (7th out of 280 cities)
  • 86 percent rated the courtesy of city employees as either "excellent" or "good" – the twelfth-highest rating given in any of the benchmark cities (12th out of 233 cities)
  • 87 percent rated the overall quality of services provided by the City of Scottsdale as “excellent” or “good” – which puts Scottsdale in the top 5 percent of 356 benchmark cities (21st of 356 cities)
  • 74 percent feel they get “excellent” or “good” value of services for taxes paid in Scottsdale – which puts Scottsdale in the top 5 percent of 328 benchmark cities (18th of 328 cities)
  • City parks, libraries, recreation opportunities, police services, fire services, garbage and recycling collection all were ranked “much above” the national benchmark comparisons
  • Residents gave favorable ratings to almost all local government services. Of the 35 services where comparisons with other communities were available, Scottsdale residents rated 31 above the national benchmark
