Extra Focus in April on Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention
Two important campaigns kick off in April---Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention months.
The goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.
The goal of Child Abuse Prevention month is to encourage public awareness of child abuse and neglect, recommit resources to the cause and promote community involvement in preventing child mal-treatment, and to promote well-being.
The Scottsdale Family Advocacy Center uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide services to victims of violent crimes – a community-oriented, collaborative approach to investigate domestic violence, and adult and child physical or sexual abuse cases.
Center representatives – including police detectives, crisis intervention specialists and nurses – will be at various events and locations to provide information and resources about sexual assault awareness and child abuse prevention:
• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7: Family Day at Tumbleweed Park, 745 E Germann Road, Chandler. www.preventchildabuse.us
• 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, April 13: Members of the Special Victims Unit and Scottsdale Family Advocacy Center will be teaming with the Police Department’s DUI unit for “Know your Limit” detail, 7401 E. Camelback Road.
• 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18: Citizens Police Academy presentation.
About Sexual Assault: Every two minutes someone in the United States is the victim of sexual assault. That equates to 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men with 44 percent of victims younger than 18. Eighty percent are younger than 30. It is estimated that 55 percent of sexual assaults are never reported to police. Two-thirds of all assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. Fifteen of 16 rapists will never spend a day in jail.
About Child Abuse: A child abuse report is made every 10 seconds. That adds up to more than 3 million reports of child abuse annually in the United States. Child neglect is the most common form of abuse. The reality is that all forms of child abuse are underreported.
