Phoenix’s Oldest Mercedes-Benz Dealership Announces Move to Scottsdale
The owner of the oldest Mercedes-Benz dealership in Phoenix, currently located at 3rd Avenue and Indian School Road, has announced plans to relocate to downtown Scottsdale. Several years ago the city lost its only Mercedes-Benz location when a dealership left the Scottsdale Airpark area for the Phoenix side of Scottsdale Road.
"We are thrilled at the prospect of Mercedes moving back to Scottsdale,” said Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane. “A luxury auto dealer would fit well in our thriving downtown and have a substantial positive economic impact."
The new dealership is planned at 4725 N. Scottsdale Road – just east of Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall – where an aging office building will be modified and expanded to house the new facility. Owner Chuck Theisen says the move is a $25 million investment for downtown Scottsdale that will include his corporate headquarters and create 150 new high-paying jobs. No city subsidies or incentives are being sought.
The existing zoning at the proposed location allows for an auto dealership; however a new conditional use permit will be required. Conditional use permits are reviewed by the city planning commission before going before the city council for approval or denial. Those hearings have not yet been scheduled but are expected to occur in October and November. Neighborhood outreach and involvement is required as part of the application process.
Theisen, who has been a Mercedes dealer for more than 30 years, is a graduate of Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. In addition to the downtown Phoenix location, he also owns Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead. That facility was the first auto dealership in Arizona certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
The dealership proposed in Scottsdale, which has already been approved by Mercedes-Benz of North America, also will incorporate many elements of those LEED standards. Along with environmentally-friendly features the proposed design includes neighbor-friendly elements like fully-enclosed service bays, screened lighting, insulated garage doors and no internal or external speakers.
