Economic Vitality Department strengthens business emphasis, adds expertise

Scottsdale’s Economic Vitality Department strengthens
business emphasis, adds expertise
As part of an overall assessment of the city’s economic development activities, Scottsdale’s economic vitality department is adjusting some of its programs, reorganizing staff assignments and has added a new face with substantial business experience.
With the departure of five staff members and some early signs of economic recovery, the department is retooling to create, support and expand initiatives that will work in concert to create conditions for future success, according to Economic Vitality Director Jim Mullin.
“Our success in creating a healthy environment for business in Scottsdale will go a long way toward keeping this city’s quality of life in the upper echelon, because healthy businesses mean good jobs for residents, more tax revenue to support quality services, and opportunities for future growth,” Mullin said.
The department recently started monthly “merchant talk” meetings where economic vitality staff meets with downtown businesses. The effort is already generating positive feedback and staff hopes it will strengthen relationships and collaboration with and among downtown merchants over time.
Another change is the addition Cindi Eberhardt, who comes from the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce where she spent three years as executive vice president for economic development and public policy.
“She has unbeatable contacts and relationships with the business community,” said Mullin. “She will be an important part of the team focused on improving the overall health of the city’s economy.”
Eberhardt will serve as a conduit between the department and Scottsdale businesses, and also work on strengthening Scottsdale’s business climate as the city refocuses efforts to support and attract business. Prior to her years at the chamber, she was a vice president at BankOne and spent eight years running her own business consulting firm. Eberhardt has also served on Scottsdale’s budget review commission and charter review task force.
The city’s largest employer sees the addition of Eberhardt as a positive move for the city.
"Cindi has a proven track record working with the business community,” said Tom Sadvary, president and chief executive officer of Scottsdale Healthcare. “I personally look forward to working with Cindi in her new role.”
Scottsdale’s economic vitality experts will continue evaluating key areas and adjusting programs in the months ahead as they work to attract and support city businesses and tourism.
