Scottsdale celebrates Gold Bicycle Friendly Community
designation
Come celebrate as Scottsdale unveils one of its newest Greenbelt amenities and marks the city’s designation as one of the nation’s top places to bicycle.
Join us for a free event at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the northwest corner of Hayden and Chaparral roads overlooking the shared-use path, underpass and tunnel.
The League of American Bicyclists Advocacy Director Walter Finch will be there to present city staff with the Gold Bicycle Friendly Community designation. Brief remarks will start at 7:30 a.m.
This location showcases one of the city’s recently completed shared-use path connections and exemplifies why Scottsdale is receiving the Bicycle-Friendly designation. The Chaparral underpass connects an important gap in the bikeway network and creates a more comfortable crossing of Chaparral Road for path users. The recently modified tunnel under Hayden Road also connects path users with a more convenient east/west crossing below the street.
This underpass is located within the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, an oasis of parks, lakes, paths and golf courses traversing more than 11 miles through the heart of Scottsdale. Scottsdale also plans to launch a new webpage Thursday featuring new information about the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, its path system and recreational amenities. The page will be hosted on the city’s website and available at www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/parks/greenbelt.
This designation puts Scottsdale among the top bicycle-friendly communities in the nation. Only three out of 490 cities that applied for the program have a higher rating than Scottsdale.
