Code Enforcement pedals in bicycle unit
The city’s Code Enforcement inspectors are taking the pedal to the pavement by jumping on bicycles rather than in cars to keep Scottsdale safe and clean.
The benefits of the program include:
• Bikes are more accessible to hard to reach places such as multiuse paths
• Riding bikes save time by not having to park a vehicle
• Riding bikes save on fuel costs and helps the environment
• Bicycles are less intimidating than vehicles
• Employee bicycle use furthers the city’s “bicycle-friendly community” image
During a test period, bicycle code inspectors logged more than 100 miles, made 40 citizen contacts and issued 170 compliance requests – 95 percent of which have been resolved after initial inspection. In addition, inspectors removed graffiti from more than 70 downtown sites – in areas that wouldn’t be seen or accessible by car.
There also are environmental and cost-savings benefits with a bicycle unit. The city estimates a $15,500 savings per year in gas and vehicle maintenance fees.
