9-11 Remembrance: Reflection and Call to Action

The public has an opportunity to reflect on 9-11 and help their community and themselves prepare for future emergencies through programs offered this September by the Scottsdale Fire Department.

The Department’s free 9-11 Memorial Tribute takes place Sept. 10-15 at the Scottsdale Center of the Performing Arts.  The reading of the names of those who lost their lives begins at 1:30 pm. Sept. 11. The 9-11 Remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil begins at 6 pm.

The Community Outreach for Preparedness (COPE) fair launches On Saturday, Sept. 15. This free event at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts features exhibitors, speakers and activities designed to prepare individuals, families and communities for emergencies.

“This week-long Tribute exists because of the generosity, creativity and support of volunteers throughout our community,” said Interim Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “Out of the sorrow of 9-11 came a commitment to give back. At this year’s 9-11 Tribute, we encourage individuals to reflect and pledge to help a person, our community or our nation through an act of kindness or service. This call to action can result in a healthier and stronger community.”

The Memorial Tribute consists of nearly 3,000 memorial cards with photos and biographies of individuals who lost their lives during the attacks of 9-11. The cards are suspended from metal cables symbolizing the Twin Towers, airplane wing and Pentagon shape. The American flag cables house all first responders who died. The National Unity Flag which features all the state flags and six US districts will be on display.

“We want visitors to see all of the memorial cards and feel the overwhelming effect of how many people lost their lives on that day,” said architect Brian Laubenthal, principal of the Scottsdale architectural firm Aline. The company volunteered its design services to create an exhibit to bring home the impact of 9-11. The memorial cards were created by Scottsdale resident Lisa Vella.
