Adopt-A-Senior & Beat the Heat

Adopt-a-Senior

Adopt-A-Senior PhotoThe Adopt-a-Senior program serves low-income, homebound, isolated seniors in Scottsdale. The program starts accepting donations in October and culminates with the delivering of gift bags before Christmas. This wonderful program serves two functions. First, we brighten the holiday season for so many with the generous gifts from our donors. Second, City of Scottsdale social workers and staff get to assess the growing need of our homebound seniors. This allows us to provide further services such as transportation, caregiving, house cleaning, and home delivered meals.

This program started when the Via Linda Senior Center opened in 1997. Staff members wanted to help two sisters who had no one but each other and no money for the holidays. So, they gathered some donations from City of Scottsdale staff and generous patrons. With the donated money, they were able to purchase groceries for a turkey dinner as well as some personal hygiene items, blankets, and sweaters.

The recipients of this program are referred by City of Scottsdale social workers and two home delivered meal programs. The number of recipients has risen every year. We now have over 225 seniors as recipients of the Adopt-a-Senior program. Unfortunately, the need for this program grows more rapidly than we have donations. Beat The Heat

Beat the Heat PhotoThe Beat the Heat program serves low-income, homebound, isolated seniors in Scottsdale. The program starts accepting donations in April and culminates with the delivering of care packages in late June. This wonderful program serves two functions. First, we bring summer relief for so many with the generous gifts from our donors. Second, City of Scottsdale social workers and staff get to assess the growing need of our homebound seniors. This allows us to provide further services such as transportation, caregiving, house cleaning, and home delivered meals.

This program started in 1999 after the success of the Adopt-a-Senior program. Staff members wanted to help seniors more than once a year. So, they gathered some donations from City of Scottsdale staff and generous patrons. With the donated money, they were able to provide seniors with a grocery gift card, stamps, bottled water, snacks, personal hygiene items, and other summer relief items.

The recipients of this program are referred by City of Scottsdale social workers and two home delivered meal programs. The number of recipients has risen every year. We now have over 225 seniors as recipients of the Beat the Heat program. Unfortunately, the need for this program grows more rapidly than we have donations.
