Focus on Pedestrian Safety

In the past two years, over 85 pedestrian-vehicle crashes were reported in Scottsdale, most of which resulted in serious injury to the pedestrian. Nationally, over 50% of pedestrians injured in collisions with a car were adults.

There are many ways to avoid being one of these statistics. ManonSWWalking has many benefits, and it’s always good to follow a few simple rules when you’re out and about on the city streets.

  • Always Walk on the Sidewalk – if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk facing traffic
  • Pay Attention – use your judgment
    • Stand Clear of buses, hedges, parked cars and other obstacles before stepping into traffic
    • Don’t Assume vehicles will stop for you just because you’re in a crosswalk
      • Make eye contact with drivers
      • Proceed after they show signs of slowing or stopping for you
  • LadyinCWCross at marked crosswalks – or at intersections if possible. The further away from an intersection you cross, the more dangerous it is for you
  • Look Before You Cross the Street – don’t rely solely on pedestrian signals
  • Watch for Turning Vehicles – make sure the driver sees you and is stopping
  • Look “left-right-behind you and left again” –before crossing a street WalkSignal
  • When Crossing Several Lanes of Traffic – look across all the lanes you are crossing and make sure each lane is clear before proceeding
  • Avoid Talking on a Cell Phone or using headphones when you walk – it’s safer to be able to hear what’s going on around you
  • At night wear light colored clothing or clothing with reflective material – make sure you are visible to drivers
