Scottsdale Fire Department offers several kinds of CPR, First Aid and safety classes for the community. Some are special classes that require a fee and usually offer a certification card. These are at set sites. Safety awareness classes are FREE, usually presented in about an hour, and are available to be presented at most requested locations.

Class Descriptions

Basic CPR/AED and First Aid Combination Class

This course is intended for community members and people who do not work in the healthcare field but are required to or just desire to have CPR/AED and First Aid knowledge and skills. It is ideal for employee emergency response teams, school bus drivers, adult residential care personnel, child care workers, teachers, parents and babysitters. CPR instruction will include infant, child and adult. This is a non-certifying class.

Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona also lists several agencies who also offer certification classes.

$65 (plus $10 processing fee)

Classes are offered at Scottsdale Fire Headquarters at 8401 E. Indian School Road. Class sizes are a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 20. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Registration for this class is completed through Leisure Education.

CPR for Professionals

This course is intended for healthcare providers, first responders, and professional rescuers in and outside the hospital or for those needing professional level basic life support training as a jobrequirement.

$65 (plus $10 processing fee)

Classes are offered at Scottsdale Fire Headquarters at 8401 E. Indian School Road. Class sizes are a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 20. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Registration for this class is completed through Leisure Education.

Hands-Only CPR

Become a lifesaver with a FREE hands-only CPR presentation!

Most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location die because they do not receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. As a bystander, don't be afraid. Your actions can only help. In this 45-minute class, learn the 3 steps to saving a life, which includes hands-only CPR and how to use an AED.

You can request a Hand-Only CPR awareness class for your group or organization. Class sizes are a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 50. A 20-minute bleeding emergencies class can be added.

Child & Babysitter Safety

This course is designed for young adults who will be babysitting or providing child and infant care. The program will teach the importance of responsibility, recognizing an emergency, emergency action steps, personal safety, fire safety, water safety, infant care, and also basic first aid and choking management. Many experts feel that fourteen (14) is generally an appropriate age to begin babysitting, but maturity, responsibility and the ability to react effectively in case of an emergency must always be considered regardless of age. The age range is 12-17.

This is a non-certifying class.

Class is from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. with a short break for lunch onsite. Please bring a sack lunch.

Desert First Aid Course

The Desert First Aid course is designed to enhance the natural Sonoran Desert experience and improve the overall safety of all visitors to the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Students will gain knowledge to improve the level of preparedness and safety of the recreational hiker/Preserve visitors. In addition, this course will provide basic training in first aid techniques that can be applied to recognize and provide basic treatments to manage medical emergencies that may be encountered while enjoying the Preserve. All course objectives are based on National Emergency Medical Services Education Competency Standards, as well as the National Park Service. This is a non-certifying class.

Class is from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. with a working lunch. Please bring a sack lunch. We also encourage students to bring their hiking pack to review contents. There will not be a hike.

$65 (plus $10 processing fee)

Safety Awareness Classes/Presentations

Scottsdale Fire offers safety awareness classes that are FREE to the public. These are not certification classes and usually last about an hour. Class size is a minimum of 8; Maximum is determined by size of classroom.

When You Call 911
Understanding what to expect when you call 911 and how the department responds can help relieve some of the anxiety of calling in an emergency.
Fall and Fire Prevention
Older adults are a high risk to injuries and death due to fire and falls. This discussion will raise awareness to the issues and identify what can be fixed to help lower risks.
Ready Scottsdale
This program covers how start or improve your preparedness for emergencies/disasters. Included in our program is information on how to assemble a supplies kit that contains food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantities for families to be more self-reliant following a disaster. **A student version of this is also available.
Child Safety Topics
Car seats, drowning prevention and heat safety (kids in hot cars) are among the topics offered to help parents and caregivers understand steps to keep kids safe. Presentations for pre-school and elementary school-aged children about fire, water or transportation safety can be requested, as well.
Wildland Fire Prevention
Each year, Scottsdale braces for the potential for wildland fires, which are fed by dried grasses and flash fuels. This class covers what homeowners, communities and HOA's can do to help prevent wildfires from damaging property.
