Juvenile Diversion Program is for juveniles who are referred by the Scottsdale City Court due to a criminal violation received in the community. This program is meant to divert minors from the criminal justice system and a form of re-offense prevention. Youth and Family counselors complete a comprehensive assessment with the juvenile and their parents to determine appropriate diversion requirements which will include a diversion fee, community restitution, and participation in therapeutic diversion group classes hosted at the YFS office. These classes address issues such as substance abuse, life skills, decision making and law-abiding behavior.
Juveniles who have received Court Ordered Community Restitution may be able to complete hours at specific City of Scottsdale work sites, however, certain restrictions apply. Contact Youth & Family Services for details at 480-312-7922.
Restorative Justice Intervention Program (RJIP) is an alternative to arrest for first time juvenile offenders who committed eligible “juvenile” offenses, such as curfew, alcohol, tobacco, and shoplifting. RJIP is an opportunity for youth to accept responsibility for their actions without carrying forward an arrest or court record that might impact their future. RJIP is designed to divert youth from reoffending in the future. The Restorative Justice Program is a partnership supported by the City of Scottsdale Police Department, Human Services and Prosecution office.
Adults who have received Court Ordered Community Restitution may be able to complete hours at specific City of Scottsdale works sites see below for more details. Must be 18 years or older to participate.
Court ordered community restitution is available to individuals on an appointment basis only. Tasks include litter removal, cleaning picnic sites and equipment, painting, and other maintenance duties. Physical labor is required. Work is conducted indoors/outdoors and under the oversight of Park staff. A typical shift schedule is 4 hours.
Your failure to make a full and accurate disclosure of any prior conviction(s), or to answer the questions fully and accurately, may result in the rejection of any pending application or offer for court ordered community restitution work, or dismissal of court ordered community restitution assignment, as applicable.
The City of Scottsdale does not allow individuals to participate in the court ordered community restitution program who have been convicted of a violent crime, a sex offense or a crime of dishonesty. A criminal conviction(s) however, does not constitute an automatic bar from participation. Factors considered in this regard include, but are not limited to, time of offense(s), the nature of the offense(s), and the relationship between the offense(s) and the assignment(s) for which you are seeking.

The YFS adult court team screen defendants who are mandated to complete court ordered screenings and classes for misdemeanor charges as part of a diversion plea or requirement. YFS counselors complete the screening and set forth number of sessions and education and treatment results. We will make a referral to an approved community treatment agency and assist with any oversight and compliance necessary to promote accountability.
YFS counselors offer short-term, solution focused therapy for individuals experiencing temporary psychosocial stressors whose treatment needs can best be met by using this intervention. Community Intervention Court (CIC) is a team effort which include Scottsdale City Court, City Prosecutor, Defense attorneys, Youth and Family Services Representatives and a variety of providers. The goal of CIC is to help unsheltered defendants who also have mental health or substance challenges address their issues and charges while also improving their lives. If you are accepted into CIC and you choose to participate, the Team will put together a basic Success Plan for you to follow. When successful, this not only helps individual defendants, but often times their family, friends and our community as a whole. Not all defendants will qualify for CIC participation. Lack of eligibility may be based on issues related to a particular defendant or the charges that defendant is facing. CIC is entirely voluntary. Defendants choosing not to enter CIC will address their charges on a regular court docket. To determine eligibility please contact your defense attorney, the Scottsdale City Court or YFS main phone line at 480-312-7922.
