Project Phase

Project Update

A new pedestrian underpass is open along the Indian Bend Multi-use Path on the east side of Hayden Road under Chaparral Road. The project will increase safety by reducing bike and pedestrian traffic at this busy intersection which will lessen conflicts and allow more green light time for vehicles.

Project Summary

The $5 million project began in May of 2024 and took nine months to build. Chaparral Road, just east of Hayden Road was closed for 12 weeks during the summer months, when roadways are not as busy, to expedite construction. The underpass provides uninterrupted travel for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Indian Bend Wash. The below-grade crossing will increase safety by reducing conflicts between pedestrians and motorists at the crosswalk, and will provide longer green-light times for vehicles headed east onto Chaparral Rd. In addition to the underpass, many of the sidewalks and paths near the intersection were modified. The project was funded by federal grant funds and the Transportation Sales Tax.
