This project will replace thirty-six, old asphalt tennis courts at Indian School Park and Scottsdale Ranch Tennis Center with post-tension concrete -- a modern system that will dramatically increase the life of the courts and reduce ongoing maintenance and operating costs.

These improvements will save an estimated $3 million to $4 million in maintenance and repair costs over the 30-year life of the concrete courts. Replacing the tennis courts will also prevent the loss of events from the United States Tennis Association and Arizona Interscholastic Association which generate revenue for the City.
This project was approved by Scottsdale voters as part of the 2019 Bond Election.
Project Background
The Indian School Park tennis center opened in 1979 and consists 13 asphalt tennis courts. Scottsdale Ranch Park tennis center opened in 1989 with 10 asphalt courts, added two asphalt courts in 1991 and six more asphalt courts in 2007 for a current total of 18 courts. The current court conditions present a safety concern as the cracks present a tripping hazard.
Both parks have revenue generating tennis centers that offer tennis lessons for ages 5 to senior, adult leagues, drop-in play, tournaments and are United States Tennis Association member facilities. This project will consist of the demolition of all courts at each facility and rebuilding each court with post-tension concrete.
Post-tension concrete has a projected lifespan of approximately 40 years whereas an asphalt court has a lifespan of approximately 10 years and require considerably less maintenance. Maintenance costs for the 31 tennis courts combined at both facilities would be reduced by $4.2 million over 40 years.
Both tennis centers are open daily 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the fall and spring, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. in winter and 6:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m./5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. in summer. In 2018-2019, Indian School Park’s tennis player participation was over 25,000 while Scottsdale Ranch Park’s player participation over 70,000. In addition to the in-house programs such as adult leagues, junior and adult tennis lessons and adult drop-in, both centers host numerous local, regional and national tournaments and club tennis organizational teams.
