Annual Cycle the Arts event kicks off Bike Month in Scottsdale

The city of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Arts will host the 2025 Cycle the Arts event on Sunday, April 6.

This year’s bike tour of the city’s public art collection will feature 10 art stops. Artists, community volunteers and Scottsdale Arts staff will provide an overview of the artwork at each stop along the 11-mile bike route. The event is free; however, registration is required, and capacity is limited.

Original artwork for this year’s event was created by Shela Yu (ShellShaker), a Chinese American multi-disciplinary artist from Mesa, Ariz. Yu’s temporary mural, A Gathering Place, will be featured at one of the event art stops. Cycle the Arts attendees will receive a commemorative event t-shirt and stickers.

“Cycle The Arts brings bike riders and art enthusiasts together for a unique bike ride showcasing the city’s public art and the bikeway network,” said Mark Melnychenko, Scottsdale’s Transportation and Streets Director. “Scottsdale is a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community, and this event is a terrific opportunity to promote bicycling and build community.”

The city is sponsoring bike events throughout April, including Tour de Scottsdale and Bike to Work Day.

"Cycle the Arts is always such a fun, physical and educational way for Scottsdale Public Art to partner with the city of Scottsdale,” said Kati Ballares, director of Scottsdale Public Art. “While we love all of 161 pieces of public art that we care for throughout the city, we're excited to highlight a few special pieces on this year's tour, including a brand-new mural on the south side of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art titled 'Big Ole Gecko.' This colorful reptile has been greeting passersby along 2nd Street since it was completed by artist Kayla Newnam last month."

An interactive self-guided map of this year’s Cycle the Arts route will be available online following the April 6 event and will include links to artwork featured along the route. Additional information about the city’s public art collection is available by visiting Scottsdale Public Art. Augmented reality experiences for numerous public artworks can be accessed via the Hoverlay app.

Scottsdale has been recognized as a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists since 2011. The city has an extensive network of bicycle amenities, including 125 miles of multiuse paths, 160 miles of unpaved trails, and 280 miles of bike lanes and routes.
