Arizona Bike Week cruises into Scottsdale with a focus on safety

Arizona Bike Week returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale April 2 - 6, bringing thousands of riders and enthusiasts together for one of the largest motorcycle events in the Southwest.

As bikers gather for the five-day festival featuring concerts, vendors and group rides, event organizers, city leaders and the Scottsdale Police Department are taking the opportunity to promote a crucial message – motorcycle safety.

Mayor Lisa Borowsky has officially proclaimed April as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" in Scottsdale, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering a safe environment for all road users.

“Arizona Bike Week is an exciting time for our city, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely,” said Mayor Borowsky. “By raising awareness about motorcycle safety and encouraging drivers to be extra vigilant, we can help prevent collisions and keep our streets safe for everyone.”

Scottsdale Police are actively engaging with the biking community to spread awareness of Arizona’s motorcycle laws and best practices for road safety.

"We are thrilled to be back in Scottsdale for another incredible Arizona Bike Week," said Lisa Cyr, event producer of Arizona Bike Week. "Partnering with the city and law enforcement allows us to ensure a safer experience for all riders and attendees. Safety is a top priority for us, and we appreciate Scottsdale’s commitment to educating both motorcyclists and drivers about responsible road-sharing."

One key focus is Arizona’s lane filtering law, which allows motorcyclists to move between stopped vehicles in certain conditions. Lane filtering is legal only when traffic is at a complete stop on roads with at least two lanes in the same direction and a posted speed limit of 45 mph or less, and motorcyclists may not exceed 15 mph while doing so. Scottsdale Police are reminding riders to use caution and ensure they comply with the law to prevent accidents.

Additionally, the department is reinforcing the “Look Twice, Save a Life” message aimed at all motorists. With an increased number of motorcycles on the road, drivers are urged to check their blind spots, use extra caution when changing lanes and maintain a safe following distance.

Safety tips for motorcyclists:

  • Always wear a helmet and protective gear.
  • Stay visible by wearing bright clothing and using reflective materials.
  • Obey speed limits and traffic signals.
  • Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot.
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Safety tips for other drivers:

  • Always check twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections.
  • Give motorcyclists a full lane and maintain a safe distance.
  • Be extra cautious when making left turns.
  • Avoid distractions like texting or eating while driving.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Whether you’re attending the event or just driving through the city, remember – a little extra awareness can save lives.
