The Scottsdale City Council has appointed Greg Caton as interim city manager. Caton, who served as one of Scottsdale’s assistant city managers since May 2024, steps into the interim city manager role after Bill Murphy, who briefly served in that capacity upon Jim Thompson’s departure in December, retired.
Caton is a native Coloradan with an extensive background in municipal government. Prior to his Scottsdale service, he spent eight years as city manager in Grand Junction, Colorado. His previous experience also includes time as town manager in Oro Valley, Arizona, and eight years as the assistant city manager in Durango, Colorado.
Greg Caton holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Fort Lewis College in Durango, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. He is a credentialed city manager through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and is an active local government professional, participating in statewide multijurisdictional groups.
Caton assumed the role as Scottsdale’s interim city manager on Jan. 14.
