30-year-old Maximillian B.D. Yanofsky has been identified as the suspect who shot an HonorHealth security guard just after 1 p.m. on March 2 inside the emergency room (ER) at the HonorHealth Shea campus in Scottsdale. Yanofsky was quickly detained by additional HonorHealth security team members and staff and was arrested by responding police. The incident unfolded and was contained in about 6 minutes. Yanofsky is facing numerous felony charges. 

A family member initially took Yanofsky to HonorHealth Shea earlier in the afternoon as a potential patient. Just after 1 p.m., police were called for a disturbance in the ER. That call escalated into an altercation with security. During that altercation, Yanofsky produced a gun he brought into the hospital and shot a security guard in the upper body. Other security team members and employees were able to disarm and restrain Yanofsky until police arrived and placed him under arrest minutes later.

The security guard who was shot once was transported to a trauma center for a higher level of care. He continues to receive medical care for his injury. The only other reported injury was to a different security guard for a minor hand/wrist injury. The Scottsdale Police Department wishes both security guards a speedy and complete recovery. We also want to thank all the HonorHealth staff who helped detain and disarm Yanofsky for their bravery and decisive action, which helped to bring this incident to a quick conclusion.   

This incident was not an active shooter event, although the initial calls reported it as such. It was an isolated incident between Yanofsky and security, confined to a small area of the ER and only one round was fired from the gun.   

Yanofsky was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on the following felony charges: Aggravated Assault - Serious Physical Injury, Aggravated Assault - Deadly Weapon, Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon and Discharge of a Firearm in City Limits.
