It aims to mitigate heat, enhance the urban canopy, and promote environmental resilience for a healthier, more livable city. Your input is vital for addressing trees and shade structures in both community spaces and private properties.

Practice the ABCs of water safety. The Scottsdale Fire Department has responded to 11 water-related incidents so far this year. Sadly, five of those incidents resulted in fatalities. Water safety is important all year long but is especially essential in the summer when most drownings occur.

No one should swim alone -- adults included, and everyone should learn how to swim. Scottsdale Aquatics is offering free swim lessons throughout August for both residents and non-residents. Browse classes and locations. Or see more details under Programs and Services.

FYI

Investing in Our Scottsdale: Miller and Jackrabbit roads intersection improvements are complete. The city made safety enhancements to improve pedestrian access to the Arizona Canal path and increase driver visibility. A citizen petition prompted the project, which lead to a traffic study that justified the changes.

Improvements include:

  • A high-visibility crosswalk aligned with the path
  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon devices
  • Trail crossing signs
  • Narrowing of vehicle travel lanes at the curve to provide an east-side buffer
  • Improved visibility at the road curve

ADOT advises drivers to plan for the following restrictions as part of the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) Improvements.

  • Northbound Loop 101 will be closed between Raintree Drive and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday, July 19, through 5 a.m. Monday, July 22. The northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Shea Boulevard and Cactus Road also will be closed.
  • The northbound Loop 101 on-ramp closure at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, originally planned to begin July 8, has been rescheduled to begin at 1 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, for about 60 days. Drivers may consider using the northbound Loop 101 frontage road to access westbound Loop 101 at Princess Drive/Pima Road.
  • The northbound Loop 101 right lane will be closed between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Pima Road from 10 p.m. Monday, July 22, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 23.

This is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation's two-year project to add lanes and improve interchanges on Loop 101 between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/ Pima Road. “Stay in the Loop” by subscribing to project updates on ADOT's website.
