Scottsdale Update – Nov. 25, 2024

HEADLINE NEWS

Help shape the future of Scottsdale Human Services by providing feedback on its strategic plan. Scottsdale’s Human Services Department plays a crucial role in assisting the community with self-sufficiency, social services, behavioral support, recreation diversion programs and reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities and/or low to moderate income.

As the department works through its strategic plan, empowering the community to vocalize their needs and feedback is central to this initiative's success. By taking part in the questionnaire, citizens will help shape the forthcoming three-year strategic plan for Human Services.

Participants who complete the questionnaire will be entered for an opportunity to win a brand-new iPad! The questionnaire is open through Friday, Nov. 29, and is available in English and Spanish.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Maricopa County Air Quality Department launches annual “Burn Cleaner, Burn Better” campaign. The Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) has launched its Burn Cleaner, Burn Better (BCBB) campaign for the fall and winter seasons. The BCBB campaign aims to encourage residents, visitors, and businesses in Maricopa County to refrain from burning wood and instead opt for cleaner burning alternatives to mitigate the negative impact of wood smoke on public health and air quality.

The BCBB campaign raises awareness about the health risks associated with breathing polluted air caused by wood smoke. Each year during the holiday season, local hospitals observe a notable increase in patients with respiratory ailments due to smoke from fireplaces, fire pits, and open outdoor fires.

Maricopa County greatly benefits from residents opting for alternative fuel burning devices, such as gas or propane. Residents interested in making the switch to cleaner-burning options can take advantage of two programs offered by MCAQD: Maricopa County Fireplace Retrofit and Maricopa County Propane Fire Pit. These programs provide vouchers or discounts for retrofitting wood burning fireplaces with a natural gas log set or purchasing propane fire pits to eligible residents.
