New leadership takes office in Scottsdale. Scottsdale welcomed a new chapter in its leadership last week as newly elected Mayor Lisa Borowsky took her oath of office alongside incoming City Council members Jan Dubauskas, Adam Kwasman, and Maryann McAllen. The inauguration ceremony was hosted for the public at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

They join Vice Mayor Barry Graham and current City Council members Kathy Littlefield and Solange Whitehead to form the seven-member governing body that will shape the city’s future.

Greg Caton takes the helm as Interim City Manager. With the departure of Bill Murphy, the City Council appointed Greg Caton as Interim City Manager. Greg is a native Coloradan who previously was city manager in Grand Junction, Colorado, and town manager in Oro Valley, Arizona. His prior experience also includes a stint as assistant city manager in Durango, Colorado. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Fort Lewis College in Durango and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. Greg is a credentialed city manager through ICMA and is an active local government professional, participating in statewide multijurisdictional groups and boards.

    THINGS TO DO

    Walk in unity with our community Saturday. Join Scottsdale and neighboring cities to promote mutual respect and understanding at this year’s Regional Unity Walk Saturday, Jan. 25, at Tempe Beach Park. The festival, featuring refreshments and entertainment, starts at 4:30 p.m. The one-mile walk begins at 6 p.m. Call the city of Tempe’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at 480-858-2186 for more information.  

    Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. The annual auction at WestWorld is one of the largest in the world and showcases rare, vintage and exotic vehicles.

    But you don’t have to be a bidder to partake in the festivities.

    Guests can enjoy a thrill ride or hot lap with a professional driver in one of the latest models from Dodge, Toyota and Ford, or get behind the wheel themselves in a new vehicle from Cadillac or Dodge. The auction also includes an exhibitor marketplace, live music, food and beverage options.

    Scottsdale Western Week activities take place Jan. 25-Feb. 2. Every year, Western Week stokes the embers of our rich heritage and ensures our western legacy glows as brightly as it did a century ago. The celebration includes:

    PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

    Neighborhood College: How to work effectively with rental properties, STRs, ADUs and the CTA. Learn about managing the evolving challenges facing community associations. The session will equip board members with strategies to effectively handle rental properties, short-term rentals (STRs), and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in their community. Additionally, the class will provide clarity on the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) and its application to Arizona HOAs/condominium communities, ensuring attendees are well-prepared to navigate these complex issues in 2025!

    WM Phoenix Open road closure. In preparation for this year’s WM Phoenix Open, event organizers will close Greenway Hayden Loop between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Bell Road. The closure will go into effect on Monday, Jan. 27, one week prior to the tournament. The closure was put in place to help streamline tournament entry and improve crowd flow, especially during peak hours and on high-attendance days. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, or take an alternate route, when traveling near the tournament area. 

    Event organizers recommend that tournament attendees and volunteers also plan ahead and visit the WM Phoenix Open website for complete information about parking, free shuttle service and the designated rideshare drop-off and pickup area.
